From the page: The plastic bag deserves a second life

Idea 1

Plarn yarn for crochet

Easy 30 min

Plarn was born in communities that needed strong, free yarn: you cut the plastic bag into strips and join them together to form a continuous ball. It works because polyethylene is flexible, doesn't fray and barely absorbs water — perfect for pieces that will get wet.

What you need

  • Clean, dry plastic bags
  • Sharp scissors
  • A smooth surface to make cutting easier
  • A rubber band or clip to hold the roll while cutting (optional)

How to make it

  1. 1

Wash and dry the bags well, stretching each one on the table; any dirt or drop of water compromises the final piece.

  2. 2

Cut off the handle and the base of the bag so only the "tube" of the body remains; this removes the thicker parts that interfere with the yarn's thickness.

  3. 3

Fold the tube into strips 2 to 3 fingers wide and cut in a circular direction, creating rings; similar widths keep the yarn uniform and the crochet pretty.

  4. 4

Join two rings by passing one through the other and pulling the ends in opposite directions, forming a flat knot; this knot becomes practically invisible in the crochet.

  5. 5

Wind everything into a firm ball, keeping constant tension; a well-tightened ball yields more and doesn't tangle while you work.

Finishing touches

mix colored bags to create natural stripes in the yarn, without needing to dye anything. Store the balls away from sunlight, because plastic dries out over time.
