From the page: The towel that still wants to hug

Idea 1

Multi-purpose kitchen cloths

Easy 30 min

Cutting worn towels into cleaning cloths is one of those grandmother's tricks that never went out of style: fluffy cotton absorbs water and grease like few fabrics, even when worn. The short fibers of the old pile create more friction on the surface, which actually helps with scrubbing.

What you need

  • Old bath towel in good fabric condition
  • Strong scissors or rotary cutter
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Chalk or fabric pen
  • Sewing machine (optional, for finishing)

How to make it

  1. 1

Wash and dry the towel thoroughly — this removes fabric softener residue that reduces the fabric's absorption.

  2. 2

Mark 10 to 12 inch squares with the chalk and ruler; this size fits well in the hand and dries quickly on the clothesline.

  3. 3

Cut with the scissors following the marks; the pile hides small cutting imperfections, so it doesn't need to be perfect.

  4. 4

If you have a machine, zigzag the edges to keep them from fraying; without a machine, a simple hand-stitched fold will do.

  5. 5

Leave a few smaller cloths (6 inches) for dishes and glassware, which require less fabric.

Finishing touches

Stitch a corner of colorful bias tape to hang on a hook by the sink — it looks nice and is always at hand. Sew double cloths with the inner edge for the heavier jobs.
