From the page: The towel that still wants to hug
Idea 9
Removable hygiene towel
On old kitchen counters, wooden panels served as bases for rolled cloths and towels, held by hooks or fitted dowels — no visible screws. The secret lies in the fixing: dense, well-sealed wood doesn't absorb moisture easily, so it serves as a firm structure for the fabric without warping in the bathroom.
What you need
- Old bath towel in good condition (the central fabric, stain-free)
- Scrap of firm wood (leftover board or a batten 1 inch wide)
- Hand saw or small saw
- Medium sandpaper (grit 120)
- Cooking oil or wax to seal the wood
- Wooden dowel or thin broom handle (for the roller)
- Measuring tape and pencil
- Sewing machine or sturdy needle with thick thread
How to make it
-
1
Cut the towel using the central part, free of frayed edges, into a strip about 10 inches by 1 yard — the middle of the towel is always the least worn area. Hem the ends and sew so the fabric doesn't come apart with use.
-
2
Cut a wooden rectangle slightly smaller than the strip's width and sand the corners into curves — rounded corners collect less water and don't hurt the hand.
-
3
Seal the wood with two coats of cooking oil or wax, letting it dry between coats. This closes the wood's pores and keeps bathroom moisture from deforming it.
-
4
Attach the towel strip by rolling it onto the wooden dowel and secure the end of the fabric with strong stitches or a sewn fold forming a "tunnel" — this way the fabric slides and you can swap or wash it whenever you like.
-
5
Fit the assembly onto the wooden support, resting the dowel on two slots or holes in the board — with no glue or screws, the mounting stays firm by gravity and comes apart in seconds.
-
6
Test the stability by gently pulling the towel: if the base wobbles, widen the wooden base to lower the center of weight and add more steadiness.
Finishing touches
Make two sets, one in use and one spare, to rotate when washing. The same structure works in the kitchen with a dish cloth made from a thinner towel.
