Aloe vera gel for the hair strand
Aloe vera was a guaranteed presence in the backyards and beauty routines of past generations, and science explains why: the transparent gel from the leaf is rich in polysaccharides that retain water and form a protective film over the strand, hydrating and defining curls.
What you need
- 2 large, mature aloe vera leaves (thick, upright)
- 1 teaspoon of distilled or boiled water (optional, for thinning)
- 1 tablespoon of aloe powder or xanthan gum, optional, for consistency
- Thin-tipped knife, spoon and sieve
- Sterilized glass jar (boiled for 5 minutes and dried)
How to make it
-
1
Cut the leaves at the base and stand them upright in a cup for 15 minutes to drain the yellow sap (aloin), which can irritate the scalp — this step cannot be skipped.
-
2
Wash the leaves, trim the spiky sides and slice each leaf in half with the knife.
-
3
With the spoon, scoop out only the transparent gel — the yellowish part stays behind, since it's what causes the burning sensation.
-
4
Blend the gel in a blender with the water and strain through the sieve to remove fibers and larger pieces.
-
5
Store in the sterilized jar and do the touch test on your inner arm before the first application.
Finishing touches
Apply to damp hair as a leave-in or pre-wash, and always keep it in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. To enhance it, mix in a few drops of coconut oil at the time of use for more intense hydration.
