Idea 3

Creamy oat and soap shampoo

Easy 40 min

Grating bar soap and melting it in an infusion is the basis of the "liquid soaps" grandmothers used to prepare for hair washing. Oats join in as an ally because they release mucilages — gel-like substances that coat the strand and soothe an irritated scalp.

What you need

  • 1 small bar of neutral soap (leftover pieces work!)
  • 2 tablespoons of rolled oats
  • 250 ml of boiled or distilled water
  • 1 very clean pump or squeeze bottle
  • Grater and fine sieve

How to make it

  1. 1

Boil the water with the oats for 5 minutes and let it rest for 15 — the heat extracts the mucilages that will give the shampoo its creaminess.

  2. 2

Grate the soap until you gather 2 tablespoons of shavings — when grated, it dissolves evenly, with no lumps.

  3. 3

Strain the oat infusion through the sieve and mix in the soap shavings while still hot, stirring until everything dissolves.

  4. 4

Let it cool and pour into the clean bottle — less contact with air and hands means less chance of contamination.

  5. 5

Test a diluted drop on your inner arm before using it on your scalp.

Finishing touches

Without preservatives, it keeps for about two weeks in the refrigerator — make it in small batches. If you want fragrance, add 5 drops of lavender essential oil after it cools.
