Idea 1

Ripe papaya and honey mask

Easy 20 min

Ripe papaya has always been an ally of homemade hair care in the countryside, where grandmothers mashed the fruit together with honey to hydrate hair dried out by the sun. It works because papaya is rich in papain, an enzyme that helps loosen residue and soften the strands, while honey retains moisture inside the hair because it is hygroscopic (it attracts and holds water from the environment).

What you need

  • 1/2 cup of very ripe papaya (no fermented parts)
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 tablespoon of cooking oil (coconut, sunflower or olive oil)
  • Blender or fork to mash
  • Fine sieve
  • Clean jar and shower cap

How to make it

  1. 1

Blend or mash the papaya well until it becomes a smooth purée — large chunks are hard to remove from hair afterwards.

  2. 2

Press the purée through the sieve to guarantee a creamy texture that glides through the strands without tangling.

  3. 3

Mix in the honey and oil until homogeneous; the oil helps spread it and prevents the mask from pulling too much moisture from the strand.

  4. 4

Apply to damp hair, section by section, from mid-length to the ends, avoiding the roots so it doesn't weigh hair down.

  5. 5

Let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes with a shower cap — gentle warmth improves the absorption of the hydration.

  6. 6

Rinse with warm water and a gentle shampoo, because the papain needs to be thoroughly removed from the strands.

Finishing touches

Prepare it fresh and use it all at once, because a mask made with fresh fruit doesn't keep — anything leftover goes to the compost. Use it once a week for maintenance hydration.
