Oil and reed room diffuser
The reed diffuser works by capillarity, the same principle as the self-watering planter, only with scent: the porous wood pulls the oil upward and the aroma evaporates on the surface of the reeds. Perfume brands charge a lot for something that works with three sticks and a pretty flask — and the little glass bottle from an old sauce or medicine is perfect for this.
What you need
- Small narrow-mouth glass bottle
- Light vegetable oil (almond, sunflower or baby oil)
- Essence or essential oil (lavender, lemon, cinnamon)
- Wooden reeds: barbecue skewers or split popsicle sticks
How to make it
-
1
Fill the little bottle with vegetable oil up to 2/3. The oil is the vehicle that carries the aroma up the reeds.
-
2
Add 15 to 30 drops of essence per 100 ml of oil. The essential oil is the real scent; the vegetable oil just carries it.
-
3
Dip the reeds and flip them tip-down after a few minutes, to speed up the aroma's rise.
-
4
Replace or flip the reeds once a week to renew the evaporation.
Finishing touches
more reeds = stronger scent; for a bathroom, a few are enough. Cinnamon with orange in winter and lavender in summer are combinations almost everyone loves.
