From the page: The forgotten bottle deserves a new chapter
Idea 6
Small candle holder
Dark glass pharmacy bottles have always carried an air of old-time alchemy — and it pairs perfectly with the warm glow of a candle. Thick glass conducts heat slowly, which keeps the flame steady and protects it from drafts, working like a small amber or brown lamp.
What you need
- A glass medicine bottle, well cleaned and label-free
- A small votive candle (or a ready-made jar candle that fits inside)
- Fine sand or coarse salt (a base layer, optional)
- Sisal cord, ribbon, or fabric scrap to decorate the rim
- White glue or hot glue
How to make it
-
1
Remove the label by soaking the bottle in warm water with a bit of detergent; the water softens the glue and the paper comes off in one piece.
-
2
If sticky glue remains, rub a little cooking oil with a cloth — the oil dissolves the adhesive without scratching the glass.
-
3
Pour a 2-finger-deep layer of sand or coarse salt at the bottom: it absorbs heat and anchors the candle in the center.
-
4
Fit the votive candle onto the layer, nicely centered, so the flame stays away from the bottle's walls.
-
5
Glue a cord or ribbon around the rim for a finished look and to hide the threads or burrs on the neck.
Finishing touches
Group three bottles of different heights on a tray for a staggered lighting effect. If you want to hang it, tie a thick cord firmly around the neck and use only small candles.
