From the page: A PET bottle holds more value than it seems
Idea 8
Colorful plastic mosaic
Mosaic was born with the Romans and Byzantines, who lined up small fragments to form lasting images. With PET bottles, the principle is the same: small, colorful pieces, arranged side by side on an adhesive base, create a durable, waterproof, glossy surface.
What you need
- PET bottles in various colors (the more colors, the richer the mosaic)
- Strong scissors or craft knife
- Ruler and permanent marker
- A base to apply it to (glass vase, wooden lid, frame, or MDF coaster)
- Plastic glue, hot glue, or contact adhesive
- Grout (ceramic grout or fine cement mix works)
How to make it
-
1
Wash and dry the bottles well, then remove labels and glue residue — a clean surface ensures the adhesive really sticks.
-
2
Cut the bottles into strips and then into little squares of about half an inch, marking with the pen and ruler before cutting — similar pieces give the visual effect of a classic mosaic.
-
3
Arrange the pieces on the base WITHOUT gluing yet, playing with the colors until a design forms — the dry run prevents regret after the glue dries.
-
4
Glue the pieces one by one, leaving small gaps between them — these gaps will receive the grout, like on tile walls.
-
5
With the glue fully dry, spread the grout with a spatula or card, filling the spaces and covering everything.
-
6
Before the grout dries completely, wipe a damp cloth over the surface to clean the pieces and reveal the colors — this is the moment the mosaic "appears."
Finishing touches
Use green and amber bottles for earthy tones and transparent ones tinted with permanent marker for vivid colors. A glass vase covered like this becomes a beautiful, practically waterproof gift.
