From the page: A PET bottle holds more value than it seems

Idea 2

Vertical wall garden

Medium Medium — half a day including wall mounting

Vertical gardens were born from the urban need to grow where space is lacking, and they gain strength with biophilic design — the idea that having plants nearby improves well-being. On the wall, each bottle works as a small planter with its own drainage, and the set creates a microclimate that retains moisture and softens the heat.

What you need

  • 4 to 6 clean 2-liter PET bottles
  • Craft knife
  • Drill or screw with hammer for the fixing holes
  • Wire, string, or screws with wall anchors
  • Light substrate (soil mixed with coconut fiber, if you have it)
  • Seedlings such as succulents, herbs, or pothos

How to make it

  1. 1

Lay each bottle down and cut a large rectangular opening in the side, leaving the lower part taller to hold the soil — that's where the plant will live.

  2. 2

Make 3 or 4 small holes in the bottom of each bottle so water can drain; without drainage, the roots rot.

  3. 3

Make two holes at the top and base of each bottle to thread the wire or string that will fix them to the wall.

  4. 4

Mount the bottles on the wall in rows, leaving space between them for the plants to grow and for you to water comfortably.

  5. 5

Fill with light substrate — the lighter it is, the less weight on the wall and the easier for the roots.

  6. 6

Plant the seedlings and water lightly; the water draining from above can feed the row below, if you align them well.

Finishing touches

Prefer walls that get morning sun and afternoon shade for herbs and leafy plants. Start with a small row and expand as the plants adapt.
