From the page: The shiny disc asks for a new shine
Idea 2
Mirrored coaster
Before plastic and paper, families cut cork and thin wood to protect tables from the moisture of cups. The CD naturally fills this role: it is flat, exactly the size of a cup base, and its metallic coating resists water well — it just needs a soft covering on the front and back.
What you need
- 1 CD per coaster
- Scrap of felt, cork or cotton fabric
- Scissors and white glue (or fabric glue)
- Decorative ribbon or fine steel wool (optional)
- Clear spray varnish (optional)
How to make it
-
1
Trace the CD outline twice onto the felt or cork and cut out both circles. They will be the face and back of the coaster.
-
2
Glue one circle on each side of the CD, pressing firmly from the edges toward the center. The felt absorbs the cup's condensation and also protects the table from scratches.
-
3
If you want a cleaner mirrored effect, lightly buff the shiny side with fine steel wool before gluing — it evens out the scratches and restores the reflection.
-
4
Apply spray varnish to the exposed side to create a moisture barrier. The varnish prevents the CD's metallic layer from wearing out with daily use.
-
5
Let it dry for a few hours stacked with a weight on top, so the pieces end up perfectly flat.
Finishing touches
Tie a set of four with a shoelace or cotton cord and you have a charming handmade gift. Combine different felt colors for each piece and the table gains instant charm.
