From the page: The shiny disc asks for a new shine

Idea 6

Spinning wind mobile

Easy 1 h

Mobiles became famous with modernist sculptors, who discovered that shapes suspended on threads create continuous movement with the slightest breeze. The CD is perfect for this: its evenly distributed weight and its reflective surface make each piece spin and scatter light reflections around the room.

What you need

  • 4 to 6 old CDs
  • Nylon thread or thin fishing line
  • Thick heated needle (for piercing) or a small drill
  • Small metal rings or thin wire
  • A wooden dowel, old hanger or embroidery hoop as the structure
  • Ribbon or cord for hanging

How to make it

  1. 1

Pierce the CD at the edge, at a point opposite the center, by heating the tip of a needle over a flame or using a drill at low speed — the tiny hole should be near the edge so the disc hangs facing forward.

  2. 2

Pass a piece of nylon thread through each hole and tie a firm knot; nylon is almost invisible, which makes the discs seem to float in the air.

  3. 3

Attach each thread to the dowel or hoop, spacing the CDs at different heights — this variation creates visual rhythm and keeps the pieces from bumping into each other.

  4. 4

Tie two or three threads to the top of the dowel to hang the whole thing, adjusting the points until it sits level; if one side droops, shift the support knot until you find the balance.

  5. 5

Hang it near a window or light source and give it a gentle spin to test: the set should rotate slowly, without swinging too much.

Finishing touches

Glue small beads or bits of glass beads onto the threads to catch the sunlight. On covered balconies, the sound of the discs gently touching creates a discreet, pleasant wind-chime effect.
