From the page: The shiny disc asks for a new shine
Idea 7
Table mirror
Small mirrors on supporting bases have accompanied dressing tables since the perfume bottles of the last century, bringing depth and luminosity to dark corners. The CD's recorded surface reflects like a dark mirror, and the rainbow sheen of the protective layer gives a retro air that matches vintage decor.
What you need
- 1 CD or DVD in good condition (no deep scratches on the shiny part)
- A jar lid, thick cork or small wooden base
- Strong glue (epoxy or hot glue)
- Felt or fabric scrap for the base
- Optional: paint or string to cover the base
How to make it
-
1
Clean the CD with a soft cloth and a little alcohol, without scrubbing hard — fine scratches actually help diffuse the light, but heavy grime kills the shine.
-
2
Choose the prettiest face of the disc to face up; on a DVD, the reflective layer is on both sides, which gives a denser mirror effect.
-
3
Apply generous glue to the center of the base (lid, cork or wood) and set the CD on top, pressing for a minute — the CD must sit horizontal and firm, without wobbling.
-
4
Cover the side of the base with wound string, paint or fabric, hiding the glue and giving the finish of an intentional piece, not a makeshift one.
-
5
Glue felt underneath to protect the table surface and finish the piece's underside.
Finishing touches
Use it as a candle holder: the flame reflected in the disc doubles the light and creates a cozy mood at dinners. A composition of three small mirrors at different heights and bases forms an elegant centerpiece with balanced proportions.
