From the page: Cork stoppers hold entire worlds

Idea 5

Door hangers and pot labels

Easy 30 min

Stopper halves became a classic of sustainable crafting because cork grips smooth surfaces without needing a suction cup: the slight compression of the tip against the door creates enough friction to hold. Before velcro and magnets, cork stops held pot lids in rural kitchens for generations.

What you need

  • stoppers cut in half lengthwise
  • hot glue
  • adhesive hooks or double-sided tape
  • permanent marker for writing

How to make it

  1. 1

Cut each stopper in half lengthwise, with a serrated knife and a sawing motion, because cork tears if you press too hard.

  2. 2

Glue the halves with the curved side out, side by side, forming the piece you want.

  3. 3

For a pot label: write the plant's name on the flat face of the half stopper and glue a stick behind it.

  4. 4

For a door hanger: glue the half stoppers onto a rigid strip and attach it to the wall or behind the door with double-sided tape.

  5. 5

Cork cushions the door's impact and doesn't scratch wood or glass.

Finishing touches

paint the curved face with colored paint or leave it natural — the tonal variation of stoppers from different wines is decoration in itself.
