From the page: Cork stoppers hold entire worlds
Idea 10
Mini succulent planters
Succulents are desert plants with almost no root, needing very little soil and water — which makes them the only real candidates to live inside a stopper. The charm of these mini pots is the contrast: a tiny living plant inside a 4-centimeter object, and cork breathes, helping the root not rot.
What you need
- thicker stoppers (from sparkling wine are ideal)
- thin knife or small spoon for hollowing
- a little soil mixed with sand
- baby succulent or a rooting leaf
- hot glue to attach a magnet or base
How to make it
-
1
Cut a thick stopper in half lengthwise, creating two firm bases.
-
2
Hollow out the center with the knife or spoon, forming a small hole one centimeter deep.
-
3
Add a little soil mixed with sand, because drainage is essential in such a small space.
-
4
Fit in the baby succulent or a healthy leaf — a succulent leaf grows roots on its own if kept slightly moist.
-
5
Moisten with drops of water, never truly water it: in the tiny space, excess water kills.
-
6
Glue it onto a base or a fridge magnet, or join several together forming a table garden.
Finishing touches
mist with water at most once a week; if the leaf wilts or darkens, the problem is almost always too much water, not too little.
