DIY brush

Easy 10 min

Turning a disposable cup into a brush is an old trick of painters and cleaners who needed a single-use applicator for glue, paint or solvent. It works because the cut edge of the plastic forms firm bristles that hold and spread viscous liquids without wasting the working material.

What you need

  • A clean plastic disposable cup
  • Scissors or a utility knife
  • A popsicle stick or pencil (optional, as an inner handle)
  • Adhesive tape (optional, for reinforcement)

How to make it

  1. 1

Wash and dry the cup well, because any residue can contaminate the paint or glue you'll apply later.

  2. 2

With the scissors, make vertical cuts along the rim of the cup, from top to bottom, creating strips about half an inch to an inch wide — the more strips, the denser the "bristles."

  3. 3

Bend the strips slightly outward so they stay firm and don't mash during use, ensuring an even application.

  4. 4

If you want a more precise applicator, fit a stick or pencil into the center of the bottom of the cup and secure it with tape, creating a handle to hold without getting your fingers dirty.

  5. 5

Pour the glue, paint or varnish into the cup and use the strips as an applicator, passing the liquid directly onto the surface of your project.

Finishing touches

For finer lines, cut fewer and shorter strips; for covering wide areas, leave them long and flexible. After use with water-based paint, you can wash and reuse the same applicator a few more times.
