From the page: The disposable cup deserves a second chance

Drawer organizer

Easy 20 min

Cutting plastic containers to make dividers is an old trick among seamstresses and woodworkers, who always kept odds and ends in homemade trays. It works because rigid plastic holds its shape after cutting, and the gentle warmth of tape or a fold stabilizes the edges, creating firm cells that fit into one another.

What you need

  • Rigid plastic cups (2 to 4 different sizes)
  • Sturdy scissors or a craft knife
  • Ruler and pen for marking
  • Colorful tape or washi tape
  • Fine sandpaper or a candle base (to smooth edges)

How to make it

  1. 1

Measure the inside height of the drawer and mark the cups a little below that, so they fit closed without hitting the top.

  2. 2

Cut each cup at the mark, removing the narrower base; the goal is to create cylinders of equal or staggered height.

  3. 3

Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper or by lightly running a candle base over them, because cut plastic can scratch hands and objects.

  4. 4

Fit the cylinders side by side inside the drawer, varying the diameters to create large and small cells depending on what you'll store.

  5. 5

Fasten the touching sides with small pieces of tape, forming a single panel that won't fall apart when you open the drawer.

  6. 6

Decorate the outer edges with washi tape — it hides the cut and gives a nice finish even with the drawer open.

Finishing touches

Save tall cells for brushes and pens and short ones for clips and earrings. If you want a bottom, glue a circle of fabric or felt to the base of each cup.
