From the page: Denim deserves a second life
Idea 4
Heated rice-filled cushion
Seed and grain heat packs have existed for centuries — the logic is simple: rice stores heat (or cold) and releases it slowly, because each grain is a small reservoir of thermal energy. It's a use for an ingredient that doesn't become a meal, but follows the same pantry logic: use what's already at home before buying.
What you need
- A firm piece of denim (about 20 × 25 cm, the thigh area works)
- 2 to 3 cups of rice (rice that's burnt or too old for consumption works, but with no mold or strange smell)
- Sewing machine or needle and thick thread
- Optional: cloves or cinnamon bark for aroma
How to make it
-
1
Cut the rectangle, fold it in half wrong side to wrong side and sew two sides — leave one side open for the filling.
-
2
Turn right side out; thick denim holds heat well and doesn't leak grains.
-
3
Mix the rice with the aromatics if you like and fill to two-thirds — overfilling makes the pack hard and inflexible.
-
4
Sew the opening shut with very close stitches, in two passes, because grains find the tiniest gap.
-
5
To use hot, 1.5 minutes in the microwave; for cold, a few hours in the freezer inside a clean bag.
Finishing touches
Make a "U" shape for the neck. If the rice aroma fades, replace the filling by opening a stitch in the seam.
