From the page: The glass jar still has plenty of stories left in it

Idea 2

Vase with decorative layers

Easy 30 min

Growing in clear glass is a science-class tradition: seeing the layers and roots grow turns the vase into living teaching. The visible layers aren't just pretty — each one plays a role in the plant's health, working like a miniature soil profile.

What you need

  • Wide, lidless glass jar (canning, mayonnaise, or ice cream jars)
  • Pebbles or expanded clay for the bottom
  • Coarse washed sand (optional, for visual contrast)
  • Fertilized potting soil suited to the plant you choose
  • A plant that fits the jar's size: succulent, cactus, pothos, or mint
  • A spoon and patient hands

How to make it

  1. 1

Clean the jar with soap and water and rinse well. Old food residue attracts fungus and gnats to the new soil.

  2. 2

Place 2 to 3 fingers' worth of pebbles at the bottom. They create the drainage layer: excess water flows down and the roots don't get waterlogged.

  3. 3

If you want a visual effect, add a thin layer of sand between the stones and the soil. Besides looking beautiful through the glass, the sand helps water pass through.

  4. 4

Fill with potting soil up to about halfway, leaving room for the plant and so the watering water doesn't overflow.

  5. 5

Plant the cutting centered, firm the soil around the roots, and finish with a thin layer of pebbles or gravel on the surface — this reduces evaporation and keeps soil from splashing the glass.

  6. 6

Water in moderation: in glass with no drainage hole, water can't escape, so it's better to water lightly and check the soil before each new watering.

Finishing touches

succulents and cacti need watering spaced well apart; pothos and mint like more moisture. If the roots fill the whole jar, it's time to transplant into a bigger space — and the jar starts another round of life.
