Aromatic citrus potpourri

Easy 30 min

Potpourri was born in France as a way to keep summer's fragrance for winter, mixing dried petals and peels with spices. The secret lies in combining fixed aromas, like spices, with volatile ones, like citrus oils, which complement each other as they evaporate at different rhythms.

What you need

  • Tangerine, orange, or lemon peels (the more variety, the better)
  • Cloves, broken cinnamon sticks, and star anise
  • Optional: bay leaves, eucalyptus, or a few drops of an essence you already have
  • A shallow bowl or table centerpiece, or a paper bag for drying

How to make it

  1. 1

Cut the peels into varied pieces, some in spiral strips, which give the piece visual movement. Different shapes make the potpourri beautiful as well as fragrant.

  2. 2

Dry everything in a shaded, ventilated spot for a week, stirring daily to prevent mold. Moisture is the only enemy here.

  3. 3

In a bowl, mix the peels with the spices, crushing a clove or two between your fingers to release more aroma.

  4. 4

If you want to boost the scent, drop in two or three drops of citrus essence and mix with your hands, always out of the reach of children and pets.

  5. 5

Distribute into shallow bowls near the front door, in the bathroom, or on the nightstand.

Finishing touches

Keep the potpourri near a window with a light breeze, which spreads the scent through the house effortlessly. To give as a gift, place it in a jar with a perforated lid — it becomes a handmade treat full of meaning.
