Citrus clay mask
Citrus fruit peels have always carried essential oils and antioxidants, used for generations in home beauty rituals. Combined with clay, which absorbs oil without being harsh, they become a hair mask that cleanses the scalp and naturally perfumes the hair.
What you need
- Peels from 2 to 3 well-washed tangerines (only the colored part, no pulp)
- 2 tablespoons of clay powder (green or white, from a pharmacy or natural products store)
- Filtered water or cold chamomile tea (enough to form a paste)
- 1 teaspoon of coconut oil or olive oil (so the ends don't dry out)
- A blender or fine grater
- A clean jar and a small brush or comb to apply
How to make it
-
1
Wash the peels well under running water and remove all the pulp, because any fruit residue ferments quickly and ruins the mixture.
-
2
Dry the peels in the sun for a few hours or in a very low oven until crispy — drying concentrates the oils and prevents moisture contamination.
-
3
Grind the dried peels in the blender until they become a fine powder, which mixes better with the clay and doesn't scratch the scalp when rinsing.
-
4
Mix the peel powder with the clay and add the water little by little until it becomes a creamy paste; finally, blend in the oil to add emollience (that touch that softens and protects the hair).
-
5
Apply to the scalp and still-damp hair, massaging with your fingertips for 2 minutes, and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes — the clay works by drawing out impurities as it dries.
-
6
Rinse with plenty of warm water; use shampoo only if you feel residue on the scalp.
Finishing touches
Prepare a single-use amount and use it right away, since the mask has no preservatives. Before the first application, do the touch test: a bit of the paste on your inner arm for 24 hours to rule out irritation — citrus peels can be sensitizing for some skin types.
