Idea 7

Cable protector and organizer

Easy 10 min

In electronics workshops, technicians have always wrapped tape and fabric around wires to keep the insulation from cracking with constant bending. The cotton sock works by the same principle: it absorbs friction and distributes tension, protecting the cable from aggressive bends that break it from the inside.

What you need

  • A sock with a hole (preferably cotton, without overly large holes)
  • Scissors
  • Electrical tape or a piece of elastic
  • Optional: a button or hook-and-loop fastener to close the end

How to make it

  1. 1

Cut the sock at the tube, setting aside the foot part, because the tube is the most even and elastic section, ideal for sliding over the cable.

  2. 2

Slide the cable inside the sock's tube, pulling as if putting on a sleeve; if it's hard, tie a string to the end of the cable to "fish" the sock through.

  3. 3

Position the sock covering the section where the cable bends most, near the plug, which is exactly where the inner wire tends to break from repeated movement.

  4. 4

Secure the ends of the sock with a wrap of electrical tape or sew a stitch, so it doesn't slip with daily use.

  5. 5

To organize several cables, cut the tube into rings and use each sock ring as a tie, grouping the wires behind the desk or the media console.

Finishing touches

Thicker wool socks work as a reinforced protector on charger cables that live in backpacks. You can also dye the tube with fabric dye to match your decor.
