Cleaning cloth and dust mitt

Easy 10 min

Cotton or microfiber socks have weaves that create small air pockets, perfect for trapping dust particles instead of spreading them through the air. That's why experienced grandmothers and cleaners always wore an old sock on their hand before dusting.

What you need

  • Socks with holes (cotton or microfiber work best)
  • Scissors
  • Water and soap to wash before first use

How to make it

  1. 1

Wash the socks before using, because fabric softeners and old dirt reduce the fabric's absorption capacity.

  2. 2

Turn the sock inside out so the part that was on the foot, more worn, stays inside and the softer face touches the surface.

  3. 3

Put the sock on your hand like a glove, or cut the foot off the sock and fit the tube over a broom or squeegee to turn it into a floor dust mitt.

  4. 4

Slightly dampen it for wet cleaning tasks, or use it dry to polish and catch dust, since slightly damp fabric holds grease better and dry fabric has an electrostatic effect.

Finishing touches

After use, wash it with your cleaning cloths and reuse it dozens of times. If you want to boost it, spritz a mixture of water with a splash of vinegar for shine on glass and mirrors.
