From the page: A sock with a hole still has thread in this story
Idea 6
Protective oven mitt for baking
Cloth folded in layers was bakers' "oven equipment" for centuries, because the air trapped between the fabric layers works as thermal insulation — the same principle as a coat in winter. Stacking old socks recreates that air cushion for free.
What you need
- 2 to 3 thick cotton socks (without holes beyond the one you already have)
- Thick thread or nylon cord
- A needle
How to make it
-
1
Choose natural cotton socks, because synthetic fibers can melt or stick with oven heat.
-
2
Fit one sock inside the other, with the openings facing the same way, creating layers that trap air and block the passage of heat.
-
3
Cut off the waistband (the elastic part) of the outer sock if it's loose, so the mitt doesn't slide on your hand when grabbing the hot pan.
-
4
Hand-sew the edge of the opening with firm stitches, reinforcing twice, since that's the area under the most strain.
-
5
Test by holding a mug of warm water before risking the oven: if you feel too much heat, add another sock layer.
Finishing touches
Always keep a mitt hanging near the oven with a thread loop on the cuff. Longer socks (tube type) become mitts that also protect the wrist and forearm when taking out deep baking sheets.
