Scent toy for pets
Scent toys have existed for centuries, inspired by the natural instinct of dogs and cats to investigate the world through smell. It works because pets' noses have millions more receptors than ours, and concentrated scents inside a soft fabric stimulate the brain, relieve boredom, and reduce anxiety.
What you need
- A sock with a hole (whole, preferably without a strong fabric softener smell)
- Fresh or dried herbs: rosemary, chamomile, or mint (avoid herbs toxic to cats)
- Optional: extra stuffing with another sock or rolled fabric scraps
- Twine or the sock itself tied
How to make it
-
1
Wash and dry the sock well, because a residual cleaning product smell can bother the pet's keen sense of smell and spoil the fun.
-
2
Put the herbs inside the sock, forming a small scent pouch; the fabric works as a slow diffuser, releasing the aroma little by little with each bite and squeeze.
-
3
Close the end with a firm knot or tie with twine, making sure the stuffing won't leak if the pet decides to "hunt" the toy around the house.
-
4
Squeeze and crumple the toy in front of the animal to release the aroma and spark its curiosity at the first introduction.
-
5
Supervise the first play sessions to make sure it only sniffs and chews, without trying to tear and swallow pieces of the sock.
Finishing touches
Refresh the herbs every one or two weeks to keep the scent appealing — just open the knot and refill. If the pet is the destructive type, sew the opening instead of just tying it.
