From the page: Idle wood wants to become a piece
Idea 10
Ironing board or support counter
Solid wood counters wedged between walls are an old solution in kitchens and laundry rooms — with no legs, the side support plays the role of structure. The physics is that of a fixed beam: the deeper the boards penetrate or attach into the walls, the more weight they hold without bending.
What you need
- Thick wood boards (2 to 4 cm)
- Metal brackets or strips for support
- Screws and wall anchors
- Drill/driver or drill
- Level
How to make it
-
1
Measure the gap between walls or furniture and cut the boards to fit snugly — too much slack becomes wobble.
-
2
Fix a support strip on each wall, at the desired height, using the level to ensure they are parallel and straight — a crooked support throws weight to one side only.
-
3
Rest the boards on the strips and screw from underneath, preferably crossing into the walls with anchors at the highest-load points.
-
4
For spans larger than 80 cm, add a vertical support in the middle — buckling (the wood bending in the middle) is what brings down long shelves.
-
5
Do the push and weight test before loading it for real.
Finishing touches
on the laundry counter, a piece of padding or felt makes the surface fit for ironing; in the kitchen, cover it with tempered glass for easy cleaning.
