Idea 2

Structured pallet bench

Medium Medium — one calm weekend

Pallets are born to hold weight and movement — they get taken apart and rebuilt everywhere, decade after decade. The wood that forms them is usually pine or eucalyptus, resinous woods that handle static loads well. The secret of the pallet bench lies in distribution: the more support at the base and more locking between boards, the less the seat creaks or warps over time.

What you need

  • 2 whole pallets in good condition (no rotten wood, which splinters easily)
  • Large nails or screws
  • Hammer or drill/driver
  • Medium and coarse sandpaper
  • Saw to adjust lengths

How to make it

  1. 1

Partially disassemble one pallet to reuse the loose boards — the other becomes the base of the bench.

  2. 2

Stack the second pallet on top of the first, locking the corners with long screws that cross the pieces — cross-locking keeps the bench from wobbling.

  3. 3

Use boards from the disassembled pallet to close the seat, if there are large gaps.

  4. 4

Cut the irregular edges for symmetry — looking from the side, the seat line should be straight.

  5. 5

Sand the entire surface, with extra attention at the corners, so no one's legs get scratched when sitting.

  6. 6

Apply oil or wax to protect from humidity, especially if the bench will stay on a balcony.

Finishing touches

add thick cushions for comfort and color; with a pallet standing vertically behind, the same project gains a backrest.
