Wooden planter for succulents
Cachepots and wooden planters have been garden classics for generations — wood insulates the root from extreme heat and cold and breathes, which reduces root rot. Succulents store water in their leaves and hate waterlogging, so the small wooden planter with good drainage is a perfect match.
What you need
- Wood scraps (or a piece of dry log to hollow out the center)
- Drill, or nail and hammer
- Succulent substrate (soil with sand or gravel)
- Succulent seedlings
How to make it
-
1
Assemble a cube or small box with the boards, leaving drainage holes in the bottom — without them, water pools and rots the roots.
-
2
If you prefer a log, make a hole in the top with a chisel or wide bit, about 8 cm deep.
-
3
Fill with sandy substrate, which drains water fast — common soil that is too clayey holds too much moisture for succulents.
-
4
Plant the seedlings, pressing the soil lightly around them.
-
5
Place it in a spot with strong light, but avoid scorching afternoon sun at first, until the roots settle.
Finishing touches
water only when the soil is quite dry; a set of three planters of different heights looks lovely on a windowsill.
