From the page: The water jug still holds plenty of life

Idea 2

Hanging vertical garden

Medium 2 h

Vertical gardens were born out of necessity for people with little space — balconies and walls became gardens in cities all over the world. It works because most small herbs and vegetables have shallow roots: they don't need depth, but rather light and well-distributed watering, which the vertical position favors.

What you need

  • 3 or 4 water jugs of the same size, clean
  • Strong craft knife
  • Sisal rope or thick, sturdy string
  • Scissors and a hole punch or heated iron for holes
  • Small pebbles or expanded clay for drainage
  • Soil and seedlings: mint, basil, lettuce, arugula or green onion
  • Hook or wall mount to hang it

How to make it

  1. 1

Cut each jug lying down, making a large window on the side, keeping the bottom and sides firm — the intact part holds the soil and becomes the "lying planter."

  2. 2

Make 4 holes in the bottom of each jug for drainage, and add a layer of pebbles before the soil, because the water needs to escape so the roots don't rot.

  3. 3

Make two aligned holes near the "ceiling" of each jug, to thread the rope through — this way they hang one below the other in a cascade.

  4. 4

Thread the rope through all the jugs, tying a firm knot under each one to lock the height, and leave about 30 to 40 centimeters between them so the plants get light without shading each other too much.

  5. 5

Fill with soil, plant the seedlings and water slowly — the top one drains into the one below, so water the bottom one first and then the top ones to make use of all the water.

  6. 6

Hang it on the wall hook in a spot that receives at least 4 hours of sun per day, which is the minimum for herbs and leafy greens to grow beautifully.

Finishing touches

Keep the mint in the bottom jug, because it loves moisture and spreads easily. Write the name of each herb on the side with a permanent marker to make harvesting easier.
