From the page: The water jug still holds plenty of life
Idea 9
Light diffuser lamp
The translucent plastic of the jug spreads light like the old Japanese rice-paper lamps: the light passes through the material and comes out soft, without direct glare in the eyes. That's why cutting a jug and placing a light source inside transforms an ordinary container into a natural room diffuser.
What you need
- A clean, dry water jug
- Craft knife or strong scissors
- LED light (hanging cord, string lights or LED candle)
- Fine sandpaper or nail file
- Glass paint or decorative adhesive tape (optional)
- Hole punch or hot soldering iron (optional)
How to make it
-
1
Wash the jug well on the inside and let it dry completely, because any moisture under the paint or tape creates stains that show up when the light turns on.
-
2
Cut the bottom of the jug with the craft knife, leaving whatever height you want for the lamp — a lower cut gives a squat table-lamp feel, and a taller one becomes a column of light.
-
3
Lightly sand the entire outer surface with the fine sandpaper: the slightly matte plastic diffuses light more evenly and hides marks and scratches.
-
4
Decorate it however suits your space — adhesive tape in stripes, glass paint in dots or even glued lace cutouts create beautiful shadows when lit.
-
5
If you're going to hang it, poke two opposite holes near the cut and thread a firm wire through them, distributing the weight in the center so it stays straight.
-
6
Place the LED light source inside, always away from the plastic, because LEDs heat up very little and won't deform the material.
Finishing touches
Group two or three lamps at different heights in a corner by the sofa to create an organic lighting ensemble. An amber LED bulb makes the mood cozier at night.
