From the page: The Tetra Pak gives much more than it seems
Idea 5
Little birdhouse
Long drink cartons have plastic and aluminum layers wrapped in paper, which makes them water-resistant and very durable. In folk crafting, this combination becomes housing for backyard wild birds, because the material doesn't rot in the rain and keeps the inside nice and dry.
What you need
- 3 to 5 Tetra Pak cartons, washed and dried (milk or juice, 1 liter)
- Craft knife or strong scissors
- Hot glue or contact cement
- Acrylic paint or fabric and white glue for lining
- Cord or wire for hanging
- Ruler and pencil
How to make it
-
1
Wash the cartons well inside, open the base and let them dry completely — moisture trapped inside encourages mold and keeps birds away.
-
2
On one carton, cut a round opening about 4 to 5 cm in diameter on one of the wide faces, about 5 cm above the bottom: this size accommodates small birds without letting predators in.
-
3
Glue opened and cut cartons around it, forming the sloped roof — the slope makes rainwater run off instead of pooling on top.
-
4
Cover the exterior with paint or glued fabric; besides looking nice, the extra layer protects the seams against leaks.
-
5
Make a small perch: a piece of pencil or thick twig fixed just below the opening, where the bird lands before entering.
-
6
Poke a hole in the top, thread the cord and hang the little house in a high spot, with the opening facing away from wind and heavy rain.
Finishing touches
don't put any lining inside — the birds bring their own nesting material. Hang it at a height of 2 to 3 meters and be patient: it can take a few weeks until the first visit.
