Give leftover paint from the can a new life

Easy 1 h

Leftover stored paint is almost a classic in Brazilian garages — and, when well preserved, it goes much further than you would imagine. Water-based paint remains usable if it is still homogeneous, because its pigments and resins stay suspended; the secret lies in straining and mixing to restore the original texture.

What you need

  • Cans of leftover paint (check that they are water-based)
  • Fine sieve or clean nylon stocking
  • Paint stirrer or spoon to homogenize
  • Clean water (only if the paint is very thick)
  • Airtight containers to store small leftovers

How to make it

  1. 1

Open the can and mix well for a few minutes, scraping the bottom — the pigments settle over time and only redistribute with agitation.

  2. 2

Strain the paint into a clean container, removing dried bits and lumps that would ruin the finish on the wall.

  3. 3

Assess the consistency: if it is hard like jelly, add water little by little (one spoonful at a time) until it drips off the stirrer like cream again.

  4. 4

Test on a piece of cardboard or on a discreet area of the wall and wait for it to dry — the wet color deceives, and the test reveals whether it is worth using in a visible area.

  5. 5

Combine leftovers of close tones or use each color in a different room or nook, creating a coherent palette throughout the house.

Finishing touches

Store what is left in small containers filled to the brim, tightly closed, so no skin forms. Two leftovers of close tones can meet on a single wall in horizontal stripes, which visually lengthens the room.
