From the page: The seed that becomes pepper and garden

Homemade seedling tray

Easy 20 min

Before store-bought pots and trays, your grandmothers were already sowing seeds in wooden boxes and repurposed cups on the kitchen windowsill. The logic is simple: small seeds need a protected cradle, with loose soil and constant moisture, before facing the world.

What you need

  • Styrofoam tray, cardboard egg carton, or small repurposed cups
  • Sieved, light soil, preferably mixed with a bit of sand
  • Papaya seeds or seeds from other vegetables
  • Spray bottle or watering can with a fine spout
  • Saucer or tray to hold draining water

How to make it

  1. 1

Make small holes in the bottom of each cell or cup, because standing water is the biggest enemy of baby seeds at the start of their lives.

  2. 2

Fill with the sieved soil almost to the rim, without pressing, so the fine roots can find an easy path.

  3. 3

Place 2 to 3 seeds per cell, about half an inch deep, lightly covering with soil.

  4. 4

Spray water instead of pouring it, so you moisten without digging up the seeds or compacting the soil.

  5. 5

Keep the tray in a bright, warm spot, spraying whenever the surface feels dry to the touch.

  6. 6

When each seedling has two little leaves, transfer the strongest one to a larger cup or directly to its final pot.

Finishing touches

The cardboard egg carton can be planted whole, as it decomposes in the soil without harming the roots. Rotate the same tray throughout the year to sow herbs and vegetables.
