From the page: The seed that becomes pepper and garden

Idea 4

Potted papaya seedling

Easy 30 min

The papaya tree is one of the most generous fruit trees for beginners: its seeds germinate easily and the plant grows fast, bearing fruit within a few months under strong sun. This happens because the seed has its own energy reserve that feeds the seedling until it develops real roots and leaves.

What you need

  • Fresh seeds removed from a very ripe papaya
  • A 5 to 8 gallon pot with holes in the bottom
  • Potting soil mixed with organic compost or humus
  • Water for watering
  • A spot that receives direct sunlight for at least 6 hours a day

How to make it

  1. 1

Wash the seeds under running water to remove all the gelatinous pulp, as it contains substances that inhibit germination and can attract fungi.

  2. 2

Let the seeds dry in the shade for one or two days, which helps awaken the embryo without drying it out.

  3. 3

Fill the pot with the soil and compost mixture, leaving room for water to drain, because waterlogged roots rot.

  4. 4

Plant 3 to 5 seeds about 1 inch deep, since not all will germinate and you will choose the most vigorous one later.

  5. 5

Water to keep the soil moist, but never soaked, and keep the pot in the sunniest spot you have.

  6. 6

When the seedlings have two true leaves, keep only the strongest and cull the rest for the future.

Finishing touches

Papaya trees have female, male and hermaphrodite plants, so plant several seeds to guarantee one that bears fruit. In warm weather and with regular fertilizing, you can harvest papayas right from the pot.
