From the page: Leftover rice still has a lot to give
Idea 7
Warm rice pouch
seed and grain heat packs have always been used to relieve cramps, muscle aches and warm the feet in the cold. Rice is perfect for this: the grain retains heat and releases it slowly, besides conforming to the body. You can even line the bag with fabric from an old pair of pants, giving two leftovers a new life at once.
What you need
- Raw rice (leftovers, stained, anything works — never meant for the table)
- Scrap cotton fabric (old pant legs work very well)
- Thread and needle or sewing machine
- Funnel or rolled paper
How to make it
-
1
Cut a rectangle of fabric (about 8 by 12 inches) and sew two sides inside out, forming a bag.
-
2
Turn it right side out and fill it two-thirds full with rice using the funnel — leaving slack lets the pouch mold to the body.
-
3
Sew the opening closed with firm, reinforced stitches, since the weight pulls on the seam.
-
4
To use, heat in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes (test carefully) or leave it on a heat radiator.
-
5
Apply wherever it hurts or warm your hands and feet.
Finishing touches
a few drops of essential oil (lavender) in the rice make it aromatic. Don't wet or wash it — damp rice gets moldy; replace the contents after months of use.
