From the page: Sweet tangerine that goes a long way
Idea 7
Citrus peel body scrub
Exfoliating with kitchen ingredients is an old practice: crystal sugar and coffee grounds were once grandmothers' exfoliants. Tangerine peel comes in because of the essential oil present in the peel, which has a refreshing action, and the fibrous texture that helps loosen dead skin cells.
What you need
- Peel of 2 well-washed tangerines
- Crystal sugar (3 tablespoons)
- Cooking oil (coconut, almond, or even sunflower — 2 tablespoons)
- A fine grater or blender
- A small jar with a lid
How to make it
-
1
Wash the tangerines well with a brush and running water before peeling, because the peel will touch your skin and any residue can irritate.
-
2
Let the peels dry for a day in an airy place or use a low oven for a few minutes — dried peel keeps better and grinds more easily.
-
3
Grind the peels in the blender or grate finely: small pieces exfoliate evenly, and large pieces can scratch.
-
4
Mix the peel powder with the sugar and oil until it becomes a moist paste. The sugar is the exfoliating grain and the oil carries and hydrates.
-
5
Apply to the skin of the body or hands with gentle circular motions and rinse with warm water.
-
6
Store the leftover in the fridge and use within a week — without preservatives, water-based or moist mixes spoil quickly.
Finishing touches
Patch-test on your forearm before first use and avoid the face, where the skin is thinner. For a perfumed version, grate only the colored part of the peel, which concentrates the aroma.
