Hanging tire swing

Easy 1 h

The tire swing was born in the countryside, where no family would let go of a still-whole tire: they hung it from a tree and done — fun guaranteed for decades. It works because the rubber tire distributes the sitter's weight across its entire circular structure, and the rope knot at the top creates a single pivot point that swings smoothly without locking.

What you need

  • 1 car tire with no deep cuts in the tread
  • Thick nylon or sisal rope (at least 10 mm, about 4 meters)
  • A thick horizontal branch or a sturdy beam on the roof
  • Adhesive tape or sandpaper to cover any sharp parts
  • A hot knife or drill (for drainage)

How to make it

  1. 1

Wash the tire well and check for protruding wires or deep cuts, because any flaw in the material compromises the safety of whoever uses it.

  2. 2

Make 3 or 4 small holes in the bottom of the tire's inner part, so rainwater drains instead of pooling and attracting mosquitoes.

  3. 3

Thread the rope through the tire with a double knot on opposite sides, joining the ends above, so the weight is distributed evenly on both sides and the swing stays level.

  4. 4

Tie the upper end to the branch or beam with a reinforced slip knot (a knot that tightens the more weight is applied), never on a thin or dry branch.

  5. 5

Test with gradual weight: first lean on it, then sit down slowly, confirming the anchor point does not creak or shift.

Finishing touches

Paint the tire with brightly colored enamel paint for a cheerful backyard look. For the little ones, keep the seat about 30 cm off the ground, with grass or soft soil underneath.
