From the page: The tire has incredible second lives
Idea 10
Mirror or frame with cut-out edge
Turning tires into decorative frames was born in backyards and workshops, where flexible rubber proved to be a perfect base for ornamental cutouts. Since the tire has already been through vulcanization (a cooking process that makes the rubber firm and elastic at the same time), it holds cut shapes without tearing or fraying, keeping the design for years even outdoors.
What you need
- A clean, dry tire (a smooth plain-tread one is easier to cut)
- A round mirror or an MDF sheet/ready frame to attach in the center
- A wide-blade utility knife or a jigsaw (manual or electric)
- Chalk or a pen to draw the motif
- Medium sandpaper to smooth the edges
- Spray paint or acrylic paint for rubber
- Contact cement or screws with washers to attach the mirror
How to make it
-
1
Wash the tire well with water, soap and a brush, removing all road grease — paint and glue only adhere to a clean, dry surface.
-
2
Draw the edge cutout with chalk: petals, waves or geometric points. Since the tire is circular and symmetrical, you can fold a sheet of paper in half, draw half the motif and use it as a template to repeat all around.
-
3
Cut the design with the utility knife in several firm passes or with a jigsaw, and sand the edges to remove burrs that could scratch or cut.
-
4
Paint the rubber with paint made for smooth surfaces (spray adheres best); rubber does not absorb paint like wood, so two thin coats beat one thick one.
-
5
Attach the mirror or frame base to the center of the tire with contact cement, pressing firmly, or screw it with wide washers that spread the pressure without sinking into the rubber.
-
6
Install a hook on the back and hang it — the low weight of the whole piece means no reinforced wall fixings are needed.
Finishing touches
Paint it with a gradient or with golden relief on the cut tips for a designer-piece feel. Versions without a mirror work beautifully as an instruction board, showing the rubber's texture as a rustic frame.
