From the page: The tire has incredible second lives

Idea 1

Stacked-tire garden planter

Easy 1 h

Growing in tires is an old practice in backyards and small farms, where nothing was wasted: the tire works as a tall pot that warms the soil faster in the cold season. The black rubber absorbs the sun's heat and slowly gives it back to the roots, anticipating the growth of vegetables.

What you need

  • 1 to 3 stacked tires
  • Water-based enamel paint (optional, to coat the inside)
  • Pebbles or expanded clay for the bottom
  • Soil mixed with compost or humus
  • Seedlings of lettuce, arugula, collard greens or herbs

How to make it

  1. 1

Wash the tire well with water and soap to remove dust and road residue — this keeps dirt away from the growing area.

  2. 2

If you prefer, paint the inside with water-based paint to create a barrier between the rubber and the soil; dry, the tire can also be used naturally.

  3. 3

Stack the tires in their final spot, over cardboard or directly on leveled ground, because once full it becomes heavy to move.

  4. 4

Line the bottom with a layer of pebbles about 5 centimeters thick, which ensures drainage and prevents waterlogged roots.

  5. 5

Fill with soil mixed with compost up to about 5 centimeters from the edge, leaving room so watering does not overflow.

  6. 6

Plant the seedlings respecting the spacing and water well on the first day to settle the roots.

Finishing touches

Paint the outside of the tire with bright colors to make it a backyard highlight. Lettuce and herbs enjoy the warmth; in strong summer heat, watch out for soil drying too fast.
