From the page: The plastic bag deserves a second life

Idea 5

Light stuffing for cushions

Easy 20 min

The crochet throws and floor cushions made by grandmothers and crafters at fairs always kept a trick: crumpled plastic becomes soft filling that doesn't grow mold. Since plastic doesn't absorb moisture, it keeps its volume for years — unlike cotton, which compresses under body weight.

What you need

  • Clean, dry plastic bags
  • Scissors
  • Cushion cover (whatever you already have works)
  • Tape or a piece of fabric to wrap the core (optional)

How to make it

  1. 1

Wash the bags with soap and water and let them dry well inside and out — moisture trapped in the plastic can create a bad smell in the cushion.

  2. 2

Crumple each bag into firm little balls, as if making a paper ball. The more compact, the firmer the filling.

  3. 3

If you want a softer feel against the skin, wrap the core by rolling the little balls in a piece of old fabric before placing them in the cover.

  4. 4

Fill the cover in layers, pressing lightly to distribute the volume and avoid gaps in the corners.

  5. 5

Close the cover and test: sit, squeeze and adjust — add more little balls wherever it sags.

Finishing touches

For balcony bench cushions or outdoor seats, this filling is great because it resists moisture. And whenever you want to replace it, the plastic can go straight to recycling without losing value.
