From the page: Your tangerine still has one more shine to give
Idea 6
Perfumed sachets for drawers
Grandmothers kept dried citrus peels among their clothes to ward off moths and leave a scent. It works because the tangerine aroma comes from essential oils locked in the peel, which release their scent little by little in enclosed spaces.
What you need
- Peels from 5 to 8 well-washed tangerines
- A scrap of cotton fabric or an old dish towel
- Needle and thread or satin ribbon
- Optional: cloves, cinnamon sticks, or rice to add volume
How to make it
-
1
Wash the peels and remove the white inner part thoroughly, because it is bitter and absorbs moisture. This keeps the scent cleaner and speeds up drying.
-
2
Cut the peels into thin strips or small squares and spread them out in a shaded, ventilated spot, turning them every day. Direct sun burns the oils and weakens the aroma.
-
3
When they crackle to the touch, mix them with cloves or cinnamon to compose a more complex fragrance.
-
4
Cut two fabric squares of about 4 in, sew three sides, fill with the mixture, and close the fourth side with firm stitches.
-
5
Tie a ribbon at the top for a finishing touch and hang or place it in the corner of the drawer.
Finishing touches
Squeeze the sachet between your fingers now and then to "wake up" the oils and renew the scent. It lasts about a month before it's worth refilling.
