Material Alchemy

Seat or stool covering

Denim upholstery was standard on workbenches and bar stools for decades, because the fabric withstands friction and doesn't fade easily. Modern industrial design today brings this back: visible denim with thick stitching is a café and loft aesthetic. And there's simple preservation chemistry: candle wax rubbed into the fabric makes it slightly water-repellent, an old technique of field workers.

Party-style disc ball

In the 1970s, dance floors spun under balls covered in mirrors, which fragmented light into thousands of glittering dots. The CD has the same magic: its recorded surface works as a diffraction grating, breaking light into rainbows. With dozens of cut discs, you recreate this effect with what you already have at home.

Wall clock face

The vinyl record became a classic of handmade wall clocks, and the CD follows the same logic in compact form: it is round, rigid, with a ready-made center hole — exactly where the clock mechanism fits. The reflective surface still bounces the room's light, giving the clock a discreet shimmer of movement.

Table mirror

Small mirrors on supporting bases have accompanied dressing tables since the perfume bottles of the last century, bringing depth and luminosity to dark corners. The CD's recorded surface reflects like a dark mirror, and the rainbow sheen of the protective layer gives a retro air that matches vintage decor.
