From the page: Plastic containers full of possibility

Idea 3

Sprout drainer and improvised strainers

Easy 10 min

Sprouting grains at home is an old technique: lentils, beans and wheat germinate in just a few days with only moisture and air, and the secret is draining the water several times a day to prevent mold. Ready-made sprouters are exactly pierced plastic containers — except you already have yours. In three to five days, a handful of lentils becomes a handful of sprouts full of freshness for salads.

What you need

  • Plastic container with lid
  • Heated nail for piercing
  • 2 tablespoons of lentils, mung beans or wheat for sprouting
  • Water

How to make it

  1. 1

Pierce the container lid with the heated nail, making about 8 holes the size of a match head — that's where air comes in and water goes out.

  2. 2

Wash the grains and place them in the container, covering with water for 8 hours or overnight — it's the bath that awakens germination.

  3. 3

Drain all the water through the holes and leave the container lying down, in a spot with indirect light.

  4. 4

Rinse and drain twice a day — this care prevents mold and keeps the sprouts crunchy.

  5. 5

In 3 to 5 days the sprouts are ready; wash well and store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Finishing touches

Sprouts go great with sandwiches, omelets and salads. Leave the container near the window on the last day so they get greener.
